You may be wondering, why do I need to do "safely remove hardware"? Well, windows may be using some resources and it's the best way to tell windows "hey, im done with this device please remove it safely". There is a chance of corruption otherwise, from what I have read. Don't believe me? just look it up for yourself.

So 1.) Either Corruption of files 2.) Corruption of drive 3.) Nothing at all

There is definately a risk, but it depends on what you are doing with the drive when you pull it out. I find it is just best to safely remove it if possible to avoid the risk.
